One more year Spain leads the international ranking
More than 500 blue flags will fly this summer on the Spanish beaches and ports.
This year a total of 455 beaches and 72 ports have obtained the blue flag, an international environmental prize that is awarded to those areas that have complied to certain standards. These include accessibility, water quality, environmental information for users and the respect to legislations.

In Madrid at the Office of European parliament, the association of environmental education (ADEAC), a property development company and the director of the initiative have today made public a list of blue flags that will be flown this year in one out of every seven Spanish beaches and ports. It appears that there are 49 less than last year. However Spain maintains its international leadership, since that one out of every six flags that will be raised, will be situated on the Spanish coast.
Looking at the autonomous communities, Catalonia comes in first place with 112 flags (92 beaches & 20 ports), following are Galicia with 105 (101 & 4), Community of Valencia with 100 (89 & 11) and the Balearic Islands with 84 (64 & 20). However when taken into account the size of the beach (km) with a blue flag, Valencia is at the top of the list (91.6km) ahead of Catalonia (89.2km), Andalusia (81.6km), Galicia (30.3), Balearic Islands (22.4) Murcia (11.1) and the Canary Islands (8.5)
